چکیده

“Staging free energy” is a term introduced to describe the necessary investment of free energy into a thermodynamic system to allow certain near equilibrium processes to proceed in a desired direction and in finite time (Chapter 4). Such processes may seem—if viewed detached from their surroundings—to be truly reversible. However, if one views them together with the changes occurring in their environment, it becomes clear that they are not completely reversible. This is the assumption formalized in Chapter 4 which asserts that truly reversible processes proceeding in finite time do not exist. Thus it was suggested in Chapter 4 to dub such processes invertible instead. Nonetheless, the seemingly reversible processes proceeding in finite time point to the problem that to localize the necessary dissipation is a nontrivial problem,

Thermodynamical analysis of a quantum heat engine based on harmonic oscillators.

Many models of heat engines have been studied with the tools of finite-time thermodynamics and an ensemble of independent quantum systems as the working fluid. Because of their convenient analytical properties, harmonic oscillators are the most frequently used example of a quantum system. We analyze different thermodynamical aspects with the final aim of the optimization of the performance of t...

Finite temperature correlation function of two dissipative massive scalar fields: Thermofield approach

The present paper aims at investigating the manner of two dissipative massive scalar fields. Two massive scalar fields that interact with a reservoir were considered and a reservoir was modeled by continuum Klein-Gordon fields. The Lagrangian of the total system was canonically quantized and the dynamics of the system was determined using the Euler-Lagrange equation. Then, the explicit form of the...

Tools of Finite-time Thermodynamics

Finite-time thermodynamics is the extension of traditional reversible thermodynamics to include the extra requirement that the process in question goes to completion in a specified finite length of time. As such it is by definition a branch of irreversible thermodynamics, but unlike most other versions of irreversible thermodynamics, finite-time thermodynamics does not require or assume any kno...

Entropy and Dissipative Processes of Friction and Wear

Friction and wear, often treated as unrelated, distinct phenomena, are manifestations of the same dissipative physical processes occurring at sliding interfaces. Friction force dissipates power and generates entropy. Wear irreversibly changes a material structure, often with loss of material. Associated with both friction and wear is production of irreversible entropy by interfacial dissipative...
